Sample this album Artist - Artist (Sample). Die Fledermaus (2002 Remastered Version): Overture by Bruno Walter/Orchestre De La Société Des Concerts Du Conservatoire. Finding a good comparison to use against this set was simple: I chose the 1931 Brahms Second Symphony, Fritz Busch conducting, and the Staatskapelle Dresden being broadcast live from Berlin's old Philharmonie Hall. The recording can be found on a four CD set produced by Germany's small Profil label. This much older recording was definitively clearer than EMI's transfers of Walter’s 1953 CBS recording of the same work with the New York Philharmonic.

When Karl Böhm died in 1981, just shy of his eighty-seventh birthday, the music world lost a major figure in the Austro-German tradition that included such renowned conductors as Karl Muck, Wilhelm Furtwangler, Erich Kleiber, Clemens Kraus and Bruno Walter. Instead of accepting a job as principal conductor in Graz, Böhm chose the offer of working under Bruno Walter as a fourth conductor at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich which allowed him to conduct Freischütz and Butterfly and the opportunity to best learn the repertory.
