You will not hold us hostage in this heist. Inciting riots, violence, and now explosions! I know the reason he’d put together a treason: He knows he has a legion large enough to leave a lesion. On the heart of America. After the major critical and significant commercial success of their second album It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back, Public Enemy return to the studio in mid 1989 to begin work on the follow up. Before that happens, the group become embroiled in controversy when Minister Of Information Professor Griff is interviewed by the Washington Times in May of 1989.
The Album features coordinated efforts with makers, producers and guest artists and is noted for Public Enemy experimentation with new melodic types. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back was generally welcomed by critics and was designated/won distinctive awards.
The album title was actually conceived from an interview from Now Magazine in Toronto, where they used it for the headline of their article. It comes from a line from a song that’s on Yo! Bum Rush The Show called Raise The Roof. The second side of It Takes A Nation was originally the first side, and the first side was originally the second side. The album topped the Billboard Top Black Albums chart and achieved platinum status one year after its release with support from the singles Rebel Without a Pause, Bring the Noise, Don’t Believe the Hype, Night of the Living Baseheads, and Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos. The album was very well received by music critics, who hailed it for its production techniques as well as the socially and politically charged lyricism.

That, 20 years on, It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back should not still have been so applicable to the lives of black Americans. That the long arc of the moral universe, bending towards justice, should have rendered its righteous fury redundant; should have relegated that aspect to its own time, left the record to be valued for its stunning artistry. Which is not to say that Nation Of Millions is necessarily the better album – although as a political piece, and a polemical one, it is in another league, one of its own making. Rather, that they created a new category; a thing that was sui generis. Nation Of Millions was not an updated or even upgraded version of something else. Nation Of Millions was put together the same way the organisation itself had been. It wasn’t simply a matter of setting beats to rhymes, or vice-versa.
