The programme features three of Bach’s superb Cantatas, including the great ‘Ich habe genug’, in Bach’s own arrangement for soprano, BWV 82a. The other two Cantatas are two of only four sacred cantatas that Bach wrote for solo soprano: ‘Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen (Praise God in All Lands) is one of Bach's best known cantatas, with an important part for solo trumpet, here performed by young British musician Neil Brough

Natalie Dessay's second Bach project with Emmanuelle Haïm is stylistically uneasy. There's a childlike freshness to the chorale in "Jauchzett Gott in allen Landen", but the coloratura is slippery and the slow aria too smoochy for devotional purposes. Pick of the Album: A warm reading of 'Tief.

Bach didn't compose many cantatas for solo soprano, but the few he did write are gems and have long been popular with performers and listeners alike. The secular works, such as the wedding cantata Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten and Non sa che sia dolore, Bach's only cantata in Italian, were probably written for his second wife, Anna Magdalena, who was a singer at the court in Cöthen when Bach was there. 13.
