Jessye Norman brings heaven to our ears with her performance of Strauss. Many sopranos have made great recordings of the Four Last Songs. Names like Baker, Price and Te Kanawa come to mind, but none are better that Ms. Norman. Her voice has an unearthly beauty, as well as gentle power when needed. I had the distinct pleasure of hearing her in Mahler's Resurrection Symphony, with Kathleen Battle. The other Strauss songs on this album are also first rate. There are no shortcuts to genius. Beauty is always beautiful, and this recording does infinite justice to this searing form of beauty.
