Also sprach Zarathustra. Conductor – Fritz Reiner Orchestra – The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Vier Letzte Lieder Four Last Songs. Conductor – Erich Leinsdorf Orchestra – New Philharmonia Orchestra Soprano Vocals – Leontyne Price. Richard Strauss, Price, New Philharmonia Orchestra, Leinsdorf, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Reiner - Vier Letzte Lieder, Die Frau Ohne Schatten (Excerpt), Also Sprach Zarathustra (CD, Comp).
New Philharmonia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Erich Leinsdorf, Fritz Reiner. Leontyne Price is magisterial in the Four Last Songs, and riveting in the Die Frau ohne Schatten extract. Reiner's Also Sprach Zarathustra is polished. New Philharmonia Orchestra. Patricia Clark (soprano), Leontyne Price (soprano), John McCarthy (chorus master), Ambrosian Singers.
Vier letzte Lieder, TrV 296: Vier letzte Lieder, TrV 296: September by Leontyne Price;Erich Leinsdorf;Patricia Clark. I know there are other versions with the Chicago symphony that surpass this one. The Frau Ohne Schatten Awakening scene is a nice bonus. The "Also Sprach Zarathustra" is not the the famous pioneering stereo recording of 1954 but the remake of 1962, in somewhat richer, deeper sound but a little slower and also marginally less exciting. It is still wonderfully played and Reiner seems less concerned with emphasising out the impact of the big moments than with finding a coherent sweep in the musical narrative; more story-teller than showman, perhaps?
The Four Last Songs (German: Vier letzte Lieder), Op. posth. for soprano and orchestra are – with the exception of the song "Malven" (Mallows), composed later the same year – the final completed works of Richard Strauss. They were composed in 1948 when the composer was 84. The songs are "Frühling" (Spring), "September", "Beim Schlafengehen" (When Falling Asleep) and "Im Abendrot" (At Sunset).
Also sprach Zarathustra (Thus Spoke Zoroaster), tone poem for orchestra, Op. 30 (TrV 176). Like most of Strauss' tone poems, Also sprach Zarathustra employs massive instrumental forces; however, it provides a contrast to Strauss' more strongly narrative works in its deployment of the orchestra in a more subtle and deft manner. Here, short, transformable motives take the place of the long, sinuous tunes that emerge in works like Ein Heldenleben (1898). Richard Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra; Vier letzte Lieder; Die Frau ohne Schatten: Act II (Excerpt).

He is known for his operas, which include Der Rosenkavalier, Elektra, Die Frau ohne Schatten and Salome; his Lieder, especially his Four Last Songs; his tone poems, including Don Juan, Death and Transfiguration, Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, Also sprach Zarathustra, Ein Heldenleben, Symphonia Domestica, and An Alpine Symphony; and other instrumental works such as Metamorphosen and his Oboe Concerto. Strauss was also a prominent conductor in Western Europe and the Americas, enjoying quasi-celebrity status as his compositions became standards of orchestral and operatic repertoire.
