The Smashing Pumpkins (or Smashing Pumpkins) are an American alternative rock band from Chicago, Illinois. Formed in 1988 by frontman Billy Corgan (lead vocals, guitar), D'arcy Wretzky (bass), James Iha (guitar), and Jimmy Chamberlin (drums), the band has undergone many line-up changes. The current lineup features Corgan, Chamberlin, Iha and guitarist Jeff Schroeder.

The legendary John Peel reportedly played several early Pumpkins cuts in his time (but never played anything from the band's post-1993 output), even inviting them to record a live session, for which the band tore through Gish highlight 'Siva' and an Animals cover, which would eventually find its way onto the Pisces Iscariot collection, before ending on a fairly bloodless, Americana-tinged number called 'Smiley.
