Title: Mahler - Symphony No. 8 in E flat (‘Symphony of a Thousand’) Artist(s): Conductor – Leonard BernsteinOrchestra – The London Symphony OrchestraAlto Vocals – Anna Reynolds, Norma ProcterBaritone Vocals – Vladimir RuzdjakBass Vocals – Donald McIntyreChoir – Leeds Festival ChorusComposed By – Gustav MahlerOrgan – H. A sumptuous Symphony wich is not a "symphony". Mahler's 8th is, in my opinion, the less symphonic of all their symphonies. It is (in my opinion, again) a great "Cantata" in two parts, very different in form and content one from the other the conductor, for sure.
Symphony No. 8 in E flat major ('Symphony of a Thousand'). 12. Symphony No. 13. Disc: 2. 1. I've lived with the London SO/ Bernstein performance of the "1000" Symphony since 1962, and though it contains some astounding playing and singing I've never quite been satisfied with it. I suspect that Lennie wasn't that satisfeid with it either, if comparisons with this later VPO performance is any indication.
Recorded in 1991 by BBC Television, Klaus Tennstedt's stirring performance with the London Symphony Orchestra of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in E flat major, the so-called "Symphony of a Thousand," is a treasure that has been missing from the catalog far too long. This live recording documents one of the most exciting performances of this work, and the combination of artists for this occasion is felicitous.
DISC 10 1 Symphony No. 8 in E-Flat Major "Symphony of a Thousand" I. Teil. Hymnus: Veni, creator spiritus 2. 8 in E-Flat Major "Symphony of a Thousand"; II. Schlußszene aus "Faust". 1 in D major by Gustav Mahler was mainly composed between late 1887 and March 1888, though it incorporates music Mahler had composed for previous works. It was composed while Mahler was second conductor at the Leipzig Opera, Germany. Although in his letters Mahler almost always referred to the work as a symphony, the first two performances described it as a symphonic poem or tone poem. The work was premièred at the Vigadó Concert Hall, Budapest, in 1889, but was not well received.
