Nicolas Le Riche and Marie-Agnès Gillot star in the legendary Roland Petit and Jean Cocteau's pioneering one-act ballet Le Jeune homme et la Mort. This 2005 production at the Opéra de Paris stays true to Petit’s original scenic and choreographic conception, from the dark, dingy apartment of the Young Man to the disturbing yellow dress and jet-black coiffe of the villainess. A mesmerizing drama in dance as virtuosic as it is unsettling! The ballet's libretto by the great Jean Cocteau tells the story of a young man whose faithless lover drives him to commit suicide
Roland Petit: Le Jeune Homme Et La Mort, Carmen. Prima ballerina Zizi Jeanmaire performs the works of world-renowned Roland Petit and delivers an emotional and passionate tribute to the acclaimed artist. This magnificent programme contains three dance pieces, shot on film, that showcase the superlative Zizi Jeanmaire along with ballet greats Rudolf Nureyev, Dirk Sanders and the one and only Roland Petit.
Roland Petit choreographed Le Jeune Homme et la Mort in 1946, from an idea by Jean Cocteau. His short ballet, where a man flirts with death, proved a hit from its creation. The lead role is seen as one of the most demanding a male dancer can take on, with its gravity-defying jumps, smoking, intense acting, and hurling of furniture across the stage. No wonder it’s appealed to many male dancers since then. Ahead of our performances at the London Coliseum, we selected five of its most famous performers. Meet the principal cast.
