Koechlin (born November 27, 1867, Paris - died December 31, 1950, Le Canadel, Département Var) was a French composer, teacher and writer on music.

From 1943 to 1964, Cowell wrote eighteen pieces called Hymn and Fuguing Tune. The composer described their form just as "something slow followed by something fast". The hymn is always a slow, emotional and dignified piece, based on recollections of his childhood in the middle West. They typify Cowell's second stylistic stage, when he strove to communicate with a wider audience. Hence, the experimentalist turned to simple tonal/modal melodies, harmonies and rhythms. N. was written in 1944, and it is scored for strings.
