The real reason I didn't dig it much at first is because I have an extensive collection of Stanley Cowell in a trio setting, and that has been my comfort zone with his music. I was simply used to hearing him playing in his trio. So, when I listened to this CD, which is a sextet with Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Rick Margitza on tenor sax and Dick Griffin on trombone, it was sort of jarring to my sensibilities around Stanley Cowell. I just couldn't get with it. I was wrong. It is a revelation to hear his lines played by a frontline of horns, and a joy to hear improvisations by the horns. It makes his pieces come alive and more 'fleshed-out. If you like Stanley Cowell, check this out. It's excellent.

This November 9th I'll be performing in Poland in my first ever concert with the Poznan Jazz Philharmonic Orchestra. We're planning a wide-ranging repertoire, from my own compositions to Beatles and Led Zeppelin to Mozart & Bartok, jazz standards with Orchestra and string quartet.
