Featured New Releases. Brazil 70: After Tropicalia.

Brazil is renowned for its unique and innovative music, thanks to the melting pot of cultural influences that have developed original styles like nowhere else. While samba is undoubtedly the best-known, other musical treasures have been making history such as bossa nova, Brazilian pop music (MPB), rock, rap, soul, forró and funk. We explore 10 musicians from Brazil that need a spot in any playlist. Chico Buarque – MPB/Samba. He is one of the founders of the Tropicália movement in the 1960s, a blend of Brazilian and African harmonies with rock and roll. The government in this era viewed his political actions and music as threatening, which led to his exile to London in 1970. He returned to Brazil two years later and continued producing and writing music. Some of his best songs include Sampa (a nickname for Sao Paulo) and Leaozinho (Little Lion). Luiz Gonzaga – Forró.

It’s the nuances surrounding the music that the liner notes shed the most light on - an excerpt: Brazil 70 follows Brazilian music in the aftermath of Tropicalia as the country’s dictatorship entered its most oppressive phas. ith the constant threat of imprisonment, artists nevertheless managed to produce radical music that, like Tropicalia before it, managed to deal with questions of identity, sexuality and society in a revolutionary manner. Also worth mentioning, if you hadn’t heard, is that as of a few months ago the Soul Jazz catalog went digital. You should definitely check out Milton Nascimento, the genius godfather of Tropicalia. I wrote a post about his album Clube Da Esquina a few weeks back on The Oxhorn Music Mix. Download a few tracks by Milton Nascimento – Clube Da Esquina No. 2 is one of the most beautiful tracks I’ve ever heard.
