The Yardbirds are an English rock band, formed in London in 1963. The band's core lineup featured vocalist and harmonica player Keith Relf, drummer Jim McCarty, rhythm guitarist/bassist Chris Dreja and bassist/producer Paul Samwell-Smith. The band is known for starting the careers of three of rock's most famous guitarists, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, all of whom ranked in the top five of Rolling Stone magazine's list of 100 greatest guitarists
James Stanley McCarty (born 25 July 1943) is an English musician, best known as the drummer for the Yardbirds and Renaissance. Following Chris Dreja's departure from the Yardbirds in 2013 McCarty became the only member of the band to appear in all of its incarnations. He was born at Walton Hospital in Liverpool, England, but his family moved to London when he was two years old. He attended Hampton School in Hampton where Paul Samwell-Smith was a fellow pupil
The Yardbirds' legacy may rest in large part on their having launched the musical careers of three of rock and roll's most celebrated lead guitarists - Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. And yet, it could be argued that their more enduring contribution to the culture is the role their music played in having ushered in the psychedelic era - with Beck at the helm - on hit singles as timeless as "Heart Full of Soul" and "Shapes of Things. Dreja left in 2013, a decade after the release of their first album since the '60s, "Birdland," leaving McCarty as the sole connection to the early days. We caught up with the drummer to talk about life in the Yardbirds, from their birth as a blues and R&B band to a tour that brings him back to Phoenix.
