Steady Rollin' Man generally reflects Lockwood's many years of playing on electric Chicago blues sessions, and yet, his appreciation of Mississippi Delta blues icon Robert Johnson also comes through on this album (which ranges from Lockwood's own material to versions of Curtis Jones' "Blues and Trouble" and Joe Liggins' "Tanya"). This is a disc that, despite its electric orientation, is well aware of the subtlety of acoustic country-blues, and Lockwood's performances are fairly laid-back

Lockwood was first recorded as a sideman in 1941, but not until he was 55 did he record his first album as a leader, with 1970s Steady Rollin' Man (although he had provided a few singles here and there in the '40s and '50s).
Robert Jr. Lockwood - Steady Rollin' Man quantity. Lockwood’s music shows the influence of not only his stepfather, Robert Johnson but also that of jazz guitarists Charlie Christian and Eddie Durham. By the mid-50’s he found himself in the enviable position of being THE studio guitar player in Chicago. He can be heard on classic blues songs like Little Walter’s My Babe and Boom, Boom, Out Go The Lights ; Sonny Boy Williamson’s Nine Below Zero and Eyesight To The Blind. He also recorded with Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, Eddie Boyd, Willie Mabon, Sunnyland Slim, Roosevelt Sykes and others.
Robert Lockwood Jr. (March 27, 1915 – November 21, 2006) was an American Delta blues guitarist, who recorded for Chess Records and other Chicago labels in the 1950s and 1960s. He was the only guitarist to have learned to play directly from Robert Johnson. Lockwood is known for his longtime collaboration with Sonny Boy Williamson II and for his work in the mid-1950s with Little Walter.
Lockwood and Johnny Shines, direct heirs to the legendary Robert Johnson, were born within a month of each other in 1915 and friends since they first met at the age of 12 in 1927. Much of their early repertoire and style was based on that of Robert Johnson. Lockwood ventured into jazz and bebop and became one of the most progressive of the Delta musicians, serving as an early mainstay of Sonny Boy Williamson's King Biscuit Boys before moving to Chicago for good in 1950. There he proved a versatile and accomplished studio musician for Chess and other labels
