Ray Barretto (April 29, 1929 – February 17, 2006) was a Puerto Rican conga drummer and bandleader born in New York. Throughout his career as a percussionist, he played a wide variety of Latin music styles, as well as Latin jazz. His first hit, "El Watusi", was recorded by his Charanga Moderna in 1962, becoming the most successful pachanga song in the United States. In the late 1960s, Barretto became one of the leading exponents of boogaloo and what would later be known as salsa
He was raised in the Latin ghettos of East Harlem and the Bronx, in an environment filled with music of Puerto Rico but with a love for the swing bands of Ellington, Basie and Goodman. He escaped the ghetto by joining the United States Army when he was 17 years old, but he did not escape the music. Influenced by a record of Dizzy Gillespie, Manteca, with conguero Chano Pozo. He was hooked and he knew then that his calling was was to become a professional musician. Barretto sat in on jam sessions held at the Orlando, a GI jazz club in Munich, Germany.
Ray Barretto's concert in Puerto Rico's Tito Puente Auditorium on April 27, 2001 would prove the conguero's farewell to salsa. After decades of dual residency in both the worlds of salsa and Latin jazz, Barretto says "Adios" to the former, opting to spend his last few years in the industry recording more jazz-oriented material. This star-studded performance takes a look at the career and collaborations of the most significant conguero/bandleader of the latter half of the 20th century

RAY BARRETTO - Live In Puerto Rico - CD - Import - BRAND NEW/STILL SEALED. This is one strange album for Ray Barretto being nothing like any of the innumberable others that he released over time and if Salsa and driving Latin Jazz are what you are chasing, there is not a bit here but a more Exotica influence throughout. Although the material could be thought as way out it is not all that much with a more traditional feel always kept concerning those particular African songs but still providing that western take for this style of music from this period being recorded in 1965 near the tail end for Exotica.
