Ludwig van Beethoven's Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Piano in C major, Op. 56, more commonly known as the Triple Concerto, was composed in 1803 and later published in 1804 by Breitkopf & Härtel. The choice of the three solo instruments effectively makes this a concerto for piano trio, and it is the only concerto Beethoven ever completed for more than one solo instrument. A typical performance takes approximately thirty-seven minutes. Isaac Stern, Leonard Rose, and Eugene Istomin, under Eugene Ormandy, Philadelphia Orchestra, 1964. David Oistrakh, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Sviatoslav Richter, under Herbert von Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic, 1969. Anne-Sophie Mutter, Yo-Yo Ma, and Mark Zeltser, under Herbert von Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic, 1979.

Triple Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano in C major, Op. 56. 1. I: Allegro. Ludwig van Beethoven. Eugene Istomin, Leonard Rose, Isaac Stern, George Szell. 3. III: Rondo alla Polacca. Double Concerto for Violin and Cello in A minor, Op. 102. 4. III: Vivace non troppo.
Eugene Istomin (piano), Isaac Stern (violin), and Leonard Rose (cello), who made such a wonderful team on the Sony Essential Classics CD of Beethoven's "Archduke" and "Ghost" piano trios, are equally impressive here in their musical dialog with the Philadelphia Orchestra. The sound quality for both concertos, recorded in 1961 and 1964 respectively, is excellent. The Triple Concerto makes a generous disc mate on this 73 min. CD. The performance dates from 1964, and it's apparent immediately that Ormandy is not as vigorous or exciting as Szell, but he's experienced and reliable. Tempos are normal, a minute slower in the first movement than the classic tropovich version on EMI. In all respects the EMI performance is better (it's truly a great recording of the century).
