Hangable Auto Bulb is a series of two 1995 EPs by electronic musician Richard D. James, under his alias AFX. The two were re-released by Warp Records as a single album on October 31, 2005. Split across two 12" EPs, the second released eight weeks after the first and each limited to 1000 pressings, the records marked a significant change in sound from previous AFX and Aphex Twin releases. Moving away from the analogue sounds of the previous releases, Donkey Rhubarb and.

Everything here is memorable and at eight tracks over 34 minutes Hangable Auto Bulb leaves you wanting more. Compared to how hectic James and others would get with the drill'n'bass template, Hangable Auto Bulb is very restrained- serene, even- despite beats that can never stop twitching. The drums throughout seem strangely alive, full of energy but fallible, ready to take off at the slightest provocation.

Four months after Warp released the 11th Analord volume, the label combined the two Hangable Auto Bulb singles from 1995 and issued the result as this convenient disc, a way to signify the tenth anniversary of the original vinyl releases. A lot of IDM analysts point to these tracks as drill'n'bass at its most innovative and best, and it would be difficult to devise a convincing opposing argument, unless it's possible to make early Squarepusher releases seem as if they're untethered and elaborate for more than the sake of being untethered and elaborate.
After Hangable Auto Bulb, Aphex Twin's music changed for good. He became so enamoured of the spastic, sped-up, seemingly arrhythmic percussion style of jungle that he recorded almost nothing different in the next six years. Inevitably, he worked this idea into a dead end, and pretended to retire in 2001. Better yet, AFX didn't forget the melodies, either. In this regard, Hangable Auto Bulb is the best jungle album ever made. The lead in "Laughable Butane Bob" is just beautiful, all nervous and excited, and taking on a dreamier tone in the break. If Aphex Twin were to release a collection of non-album tracks, as I wish he would, this track would be a sure thing to include on it.
