Black Sabbath is the debut studio album by the English rock band Black Sabbath. Released on 13 February 1970 in the United Kingdom and on 1 June 1970 in the United States, the album reached number eight on the UK Albums Charts and number 23 on the Billboard charts. Black Sabbath is widely considered the first heavy metal album. Additionally, the opening track of the album-Black Sabbath-is widely considered to be the first doom metal song.

Black Sabbath’s debut album was released in the same year as Deep Purple's "In Rock" - both in England. A deviant offshoot developed from hard rock which could be called "creepy rock", for it was inspired by Hitchcock. The aspect of violence is sublimated as fear of the weird. The title song of the album mentioned is accompanied by bell-ringing, and that ominous diminished fifth, the so-called "Tritone" which rarely failed to work in the old Russian film soundtracks. Without the gift of 'discernment of spirits' it is not possible to differentiate between purely fleshly aspects of life or even demonic effects of power, and the effects of life by the Holy Spirit. Fleshly Christianity is orientated to and dependant on feeling. Whatever positively livens up feelings is accepted without any further proof.

Black Sabbath has lyrics that range from Fantasy to just plain Horror, seriously, you try listening to "Black Sabbath" on your MP3 player, with full volume on, in the middle of the night while you are alone at home, and not get scared out of your mind when you hear that opening riff. Some of the lyrics are anti-government such as "Wicked World", and some are inspired by literature, like "Behind the Wall of Sleep".
