Unfortunately, the people at Joy of Living recovery house were not as intelligent as my daughter and did not call 911 immediately and did not offer rescue breathing. My daughter did not die from the overdose, she suffered significant brain damage because of the lack of oxygen getting to her brain. Opiates suppress breathing so during an overdose the person does not take in enough air to sustain them. That is why rescue breathing needs to be started immediately. Managers of recovery houses need to be trained properly to immediately take action, including rescue breathing.
