Here the subject at hand is Charlie Parker, with whom Haynes played for several years beginning in the late 1940s. Joining the 75-year-old Haynes for this tribute are bassist Dave Holland, altoist Kenny Garrett, trumpeter Roy Hargrove, and pianist David Kikoski. Having spent over ten years performing and recording with Haynes, Kikoski is especially in tune with the leader's every move. Some tracks are fairly typical Bird fare: "Moose the Mooche," "Yardbird Suite," "Diverse" (aka "Segment"), "April in Paris

One can never hear too much Charlie Parker, particularly as lovingly assembled as Birds of a Feather-A Tribute to Charlie Parker. What makes this release special is that esteemed drummer, Roy Haynes, who as a teenager performed in Parker-led groups between 1949 and 1952. This was the period of eruption in Be Bop, which had been percolating for number of years. Bird was merely the beginning for Haynes.

Charlie’s love of jazz and his fame as one of rock’s best drummers allowed him to pursue his passion for jazz. One of the jazz albums he recorded was in 1992 and it was a ’Tribute To Charlie Parker’. Charlie Watts took his album ‘on the road’ and played it live. His concerts included such Parker compositions as ‘Cool Blues,’ played by the quintet, and ‘Dewey Square,’ played with strings and a version of ‘Just Friends.
