Pacific Ocean Blue is nearly as good as everyone has always said it was. And the poignancy of Wilson's life and death further enforces its status as a critical holy grail. It even may be worthy of the quantity of chin that has been stroked to it over the years. Released in 1977, it was the first ever Beach Boy solo album, and much to the chagrin of Mike Love in particular, it became the sort of artistic success that the group themselves hadn't enjoyed for a long while. Written and recorded in fits and starts since the mid-70s, Wilson took his brother Brian's painstaking approach, but came to the studio as a non-musician, with boundless possibilities that had to offer.

Dennis Wilson wrote and produced a masterpiece which stands independently. River Song" is the most beautiful song on the album, but all of them are easy and wonderful listening. I only imagine what Dennis would have to offer later in his life but "Pacific Ocean Blue is a wonderful legacy. 2 people found this helpful. I've just recently decovered that Dennis Wilson recorded this amazing album. The instrumental version of Holy Man for me is so much better than the Taylor Hawkins version, although he did a fantastic job, he's no Dennis Wilson.

What a revelation - really happy to have this! For me the bonus tracks of POB and the Bambu session tracks elevate the experience of the original album. Take some time and dive in - it's absolutely worth it.

The triple LP reissue of Pacific Ocean Blue is a fantastic, moving and deep album. One can hear and feel the emotion of the artist jump off the grooves and into your soul. Dennis Wilson may not be the best singer in the world, but he has soul in spades. I often find expanded reissues to weaken the original album by including extra discs of unnecessary and inferior material... in fact, I thought this of Pacific Ocean Blue when I first got this reissue but quickly found myself my assumption to be false. The bonus material of the previously unreleased second album, Bambu, shows what a true talent Dennis Wilson was. I love this reissue and after owning it for 4 + years, it has become a favorite in our house. I hate triple gatefold sleeves but the content and care that was taken for this reissue is worth the hassle.
