Theatre Royal Drury Lane is one of London’s most iconic and beloved theatres. In recent decades it has become famous for hosting long-running musicals including Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Oliver! and Shrek The Musical. Its gorgeous interior is almost as worth seeing as the performances onstage. David Garrick took over running the venue in 1747. He stayed for 29 years until the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan succeeded him. Sheridan’s well known play A School For Scandal premiered at Theatre Royal Drury Lane. In 1794, the third version of Theatre Royal Drury Lane opened. Henry Holland designed it with space for a whopping 3,600 people (the modern theatre seats 2,196 and is one of the biggest in the West End). The new building contained the world’s first safety curtai. et it still burnt down just 15 years after opening in 1809.
