Bouncing off the Satellites is the fourth studio album by American new wave band the B-52's, released on September 8, 1986. It was recorded in July 1985 and was produced by Tony Mansfield. Founding member and guitarist Ricky Wilson died of AIDS after the album was completed, but several months prior to the album's release.
The B-52's is the debut album by the Athens, Georgia-based new wave band the B-52's. The kitschy lyrics and mood, and the hook-laden harmonies helped establish a fanbase for the band, who went on to release several chart-topping singles. The B-52's peaked at number 59 on the Billboard 200, and "Rock Lobster" reached number 56 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The B-52’s, (now stylized as The B-52s) are an internationally successful New Wave band also known for their campy fashion. Their original line-up included Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Keith Strickland, Cindy Wilson and Ricky Wilson. Their fourth album, Bouncing off the Satellites, was released in 1986 after Ricky Wilson’s death. However, his death was after the album had already been mostly finished, and as such he still appears on every song.
At the time, Bouncing off the Satellites was filling up cutout bins and it seemed like they were a band of the past, as this was a couple of years before Love Shack and Cosmic Thing served as both comeback releases and the extra security of their place in the canon. Until the early 1990s, the B-52’s talked more about their vegetarianism than their sexual orientation.

Ricky Wilson's passing in 1985 came just after the sessions for Bouncing Off The Satellites (1986). The B-52s advanced their reputation as the greatest party band on the planet to a whole new generation of music fans. In 2008 the B-52s released their first new album in 16 years, the aptly titled Funplex.
