Birds, Beasts, & Flowers is a split EP between indie rock band The Autumn Defense and indie folk band Hem. It was released on September 28, 2004 on the Arena Rock Recording Co. label. Bluebirds Fall" (The Autumn Defense). Pacific Street" (Hem). You Know Where I Live" (The Autumn Defense). Mayday" (The Autumn Defense).
Birds, Beasts, & Flowers, a six-song EP split between Hem and the Autumn Defense, works surprisingly well as a single artistic endeavor. Each band trades off its songs, instead of dividing the album into separate sections, and the result works quite nicely. Each group accompanies the other remarkably by exploring different textures within the same atmospheric vibe without destroying or distracting from the mood of the previous song, but also without sacrificing its own unique and specific sounds. Likely no surprise to fans of the two bands, Hem's three tracks explore simpler and more.
Birds, Beasts and Flowers is a collection of poetry by the English author D. H. Lawrence, first published in 1923. These poems include some of Lawrence's finest reflections on the 'otherness' of the non-human world. Lawrence started the poems in this collection during a stay in San Gervasio near Florence in September 1920. He continued working on individual poems in Taormina (Sicily), Ceylon and Australia before completing the book in February 1923 whilst staying in New Mexico.

The group released a split EP, Birds, Beasts, & Flowers, with fellow chamber/country/pop collective the Autumn Defense in September 2004, with its second full-length, Eveningland, arriving the following month. No Word from Tom, a collection of covers, rarities, outtakes, demos, and live recordings, was released on Nettwerk in 2006. Hem continued releasing material at a prolific pace by issuing Funnel Cloud, the group's third studio album, that same year. Three years later, the musicians founds themselves providing the soundtrack to a summer production of Twelfth Night.
