Introductions in the Dark. In contrast, some of the other material can be a bit overwrought, like the frenetic fusion cut "Rebecca's Glass Slipper" and quiet storm smoothie "Forbidden Fruit. Luckily, Sheppard has enough taste to keep things in check most of the time.

Recorded September 19 - 25, 1988 at Angel Studios, London. The opening sequnce to track A uses a traditional song from Sierra Leone.

Andy Sheppard (born 20 January 1957) is a British jazz saxophonist and composer. He has been awarded several prizes at the British Jazz Awards, and has worked with some notable figures in contemporary jazz, including Gil Evans, Carla Bley, George Russell and Steve Swallow. Unusually for a jazz record, the album entered the UK pop charts  . Introductions in the Dark (Island/Antilles, 1989), with David Adams, Dave Buxton, Simon Gore, Mamadi Kamara, Steve Lodder, Pete Maxfield, Orphy Robinson, Chris Watson.

Surrounded by Sea, Andy Sheppard’s third ECM album, is a strongly atmospheric recording, and one whose associative title seems especially apt. As the saxophonist observes, the sea in question is mostly calm, but storms and squalls can arise in a moment. British Islanders are fine-tuned to such sudden fluctuations: Coming from England, I’ve grown up with the physical awareness of being surrounded by sea. The album adds Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset to the line-up of Sheppard’s widely acclaimed Trio Libero (refer to the 2011 recording of the same name, ECM 2252), making a new quartet with.

ANDY SHEPPARD - SAXOPHONE Born in the South West of England, at the age of 19 Andy emerged as an outstanding musician in the Hard Bebop band "Sphere" in the late 70's.

His second solo album, Introductions in the Dark, was released in 1989. Off the back of this, Sheppard was awarded Best Album and Best Instrumentalist in 1989's British Jazz Awards, became the subject of television documentaries for both the BBC and HTV, and toured the world, taking the first Western jazz group to play in Outer Mongolia. Sheppard formed his first big band, the Soft on the Inside Band, in 1990 for an album of the same name. The TV movie The Music Practice, based on Andy Sheppard's music, took part in the contest The Golden Prague, presented by Czech Television, in 1997 in Czech Republic.

ANDY SHEPPARD is a post-fusion contemporary music artist. Returning to the UK in the mid-80s, Sheppard signed to Island's Antilles label and released his self-titled debut album in 1987. Thanks to snobb for the addition.

Sheppard has assembled an unusual quintet for his ECM debut as a leader. Parricelli, with whom Sheppard works regularly, is a strong foil for the saxophonist's unmistakable elegance, as he winds his way through Sheppard's cross-cultural compositional blend of folkloric elements from India, Latin America, and Africa. Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset is also on hand, providing his characteristically un-guitaristic textures, albeit sometimes so buried in the mix as to be felt more than heard. Ballarina," on the other hand, is a dark ballad, one of the few to feature Aarset at the forefront, easily identifiable as he is in the left channel, with Parricelli on the right. Sheppard's approach here is one of unostentatious, spare thematizing.
