Sheppard formed his first big band, the Soft on the Inside Band, in 1990 for an album of the same name. The band featured many notable players, including drummer Han Bennick, trumpeter Claude Deppa and trombonist Gary Valente. This band turned into In Co-Motion, which included keyboardist Steve Lodder and bassist Sylvan Richardson, who released an eponymous album in 1991. After this Sheppard signed a deal with Blue Note Records, who issued Rhythm Method in 1993. The In Co-Motion band was expanded for this release and dubbed Big Co-Motion

Andy Sheppard's first album entitled "Andy Sheppard" is a great album that showcases his talent as a great saxophonist. Therefore I anxiously awaited more Sheppard albums. Unfortunately every album I've ever heard (at least 5) that followed was a very disappointing example of commercialized jazz pabulum. Get the first album and forget the rest. Just one man's opinion however.

As the saxophonist observes, the sea in question is mostly calm, but storms and squalls can arise in a moment. In addition to the aforementioned Trio Libero album Sheppard can also be heard with Carla Bley and Steve Swallow on Trios (ECM 2287, recorded 2012), and on ten of Carla Bley’s albums on the ECM distributed WATT label, beginning with Fleur Carnivore in 1988.
