The Smiths is the eponymous debut studio album by English rock band the Smiths, released on 20 February 1984 by Rough Trade Records. After the original production by Troy Tate was felt to be inadequate, John Porter re-recorded the album in London, Manchester and Stockport during breaks in the band's UK tour during September 1983. The album was well received by critics and listeners, and reached number two on the UK Albums Chart, staying on the chart for 33 weeks
The Smiths Album Art Lyrics. After signing a production deal with independent record label Rough Trade, the newly-formed indie rock band launched their self-titled debut album in early 1984. Originally scheduled to be released in late 1983, the release was pushed back due to a change in production and a subsequent re-recording of the entire album
On the surface, the Smiths' sound wasn't radically different from traditional British guitar pop - Johnny Marr's ringing, layered guitars were catchy and melodic - but it was actually an astonishing subversion of the form, turning the structure inside out. Very few of the songs followed conventional verse-chorus structure, yet they were quite melodic within their own right.

The Smiths bypassed the 1980s' musical stereotypes in favor of a fresh update of the Beatles/Byrds/Elvis shimmering guitar sound. The band also decided to unleash a torrent of singles at a time when the 7-inch single was dying out. These fantastic singles, collected here, show a restlessly creative band who could do more in three minutes than most bands can do across entire albums. But the Smiths were also the best B-sides band ever, often toning down the euphoric rush of the A-side in favor of melodic introspection.

Album · 1984 · 11 Songs. Even in an era of radical post-punk, The Smiths is an utterly unique debut. From the woozy charms of Reel Around the Fountain, Morrissey’s fragile croon commences its love affair with Johnny Marr’s twinkling guitar. The band brings fire to You’ve Got Everything Now and This Charming Man, a Motown dance beat embroidered with slippery guitar. Gentle in its rage, Suffer Little Children takes on child abuse as no other band could, while the group’s singular allure glows within the dreamy licks of I Don’t Owe You Anything.
