Lang first earned international recognition in 1988 when she performed as "The Alberta Rose" at the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics Lang's career received a huge boost when Roy Orbison chose her to record a duet of his standard, "Crying", a collaboration that won them the Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals in 1989.

Featuring The Reclines. Produced by Dave Edmunds. Album Angel with a Lariat. I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden Along with the sunshine There's gonna be a little rain sometime. I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden. I could sing you a tune And promise you the moon But if that's what it takes to hold you I'd just as soon let you go But there's one thing I want you to know. You better look before you leap Still waters run deep And there won't always be someone there To pull you out That's just what I'm talkin' about.

Rose Garden" was originally an album cut by the song's writer, Joe South, in 1969. Several other male vocalists recorded it on albums including Freddy Weller, Billy Joe Royal, and Dobie Gray and Third Avenue Blues Band, but it was never a hit until Anderson's version. A recording by the girl group The Three Degrees, best known for their 1974 hit "When Will I See You Again", also predated Lynn Anderson's hit version. Canadian country pop group . lang and the Reclines covered the song for their 1987 album Angel with a Lariat.

lang's first major-label album (and debut American release) was a bit of a switch from the polished retro-country of her best-known work; with Dave Edmunds in the producer's chair, Angel with a Lariat often sounds more like rockabilly or roots rock than classic C&W, with a big, snappy drum sound, plenty of guitars mixed upfront, and lots of slapback of lang's vocals (a production decision lang mentioned with little enthusiasm several years after the album came out). And the cover of the old Lynn Anderson chestnut "Rose Garden" actually tops the original. Fast, fresh, and funny, Angel with a Lariat may not be . lang's best album, but it's probably the best one to put on at a party – it's got a good beat, and you can dance to it. ~ Mark Deming, All Music.
