Yob (stylized as YOB) is an American doom metal band from Eugene, Oregon, composed of singer/guitarist Mike Scheidt, bassist Aaron Rieseberg, and drummer Travis Foster. Their most recent album Our Raw Heart was released in June 2018. 1 History Scheidt announced in a press release on January 10, 2006, that YOB was disbanding after almost ten years. Foster and Sato had departed six months previously and then Scheidt decided to end the band Reformation and recent activities (2008–present).
But YOB's The Unreal Never Lived- four songs-in-50 minutes- still stands out on its own as epic downtrodden metal with what sounds like seasoned potsmokers throwing in their High Times for some new age religious tracts. Four songs of peristaltic chug would be nothing without at least a few vocals. Vocalist Mike Scheidt has the diversity to growl, bellow, whisper, yell, and hit some high notes like few other metal singers. Be warned, the high notes can get a little nutless in the Dio or Geddy Lee vain, but they probably only last for around a combined 30 seconds. Even with some goofy lyrics, YOB sound like doom, the kind that has you up at night wondering why we even bother holding jobs when we barely get paid enough to pay for our housing and vehicles or why we bother befriending people if they are just gonna turn on us. And those methodical bastards in YOB probably enjoy causing that pain.

The Unreal Never Lived was the last album YOB did with its original line-up, before breaking up in 2006. Guitarist, vocalist, shaman and big chief Mike Scheidt resurrected the band in 2008, but The Unreal Never Lived still stands as one of YOB’s crowning achievements. The band pulls off many of their signature tricks on this album. Opener Quantum Mystic gets down to business with a faster, rock-ish tone, while Grasping Air provides the listener with a crushing, airy slab of doom. Even though the band in my opinion created their masterpiece with 2014’s Clearing the Path to Ascend, this The Unreal Never Lived stands together with its predecessor The Illusion of Motion as one of the band’s most formidable works. A true testament to the talent of a peculiar, but unique band and a must hear for any self-respecting fan of one of metal’s fine subgenres, doom metal.
