Album · 2011 · 4 Songs. 1. SHOSTAKOVICH: SYMPHONY N. Moderato ? Allegro non troppo. 2. Allegretto. 3. Largo.

The work, over 30 minutes long (and one of the longer works of his career), is, formally speaking, a percussion concerto. It has what I would call a joyful melancholy. Takemitsu once said: This may be a personal feeling but the joy of music, ultimately, seems connected with sadness. The sadness is that of existence. But after the death of his mentor Hayasaka, he decided to call his work Requiem. Not unlike Peter Schaeffer’s Amadeus, in which the dying Mozart composes his own Requiem, Takemitsu composed the work with his own death in mind.

Takemitsu: Quatrain by Ensemble Tashi & Boston Symphony Orchestra & Seiji Ozawa. has little to recommend it outside of some occasional use of aggressive percussion, a violence wholly absent from later work. The liner notes here are fairly uninformative. This was my first Takemitsu album.
