Antonín Dvořák: String Quartet No. 106 (B. 192, 1895) String Quartet No. 12 in F major, Op. 96, the "American" (B. 179, 1893) Veronika Jarůšková - 1st violin, Eva Karová - 2nd violin, Pavel Nikl - viola, Peter Jarůšek - cello I'm satisfied. Dvořák's "American" quartet and Op. 106 - a heartfelt matter for the Pavel Haas Quartet. The Pavel Haas players revel in the turbulence of the opening movement, but they savour the lyricism of the beautiful adagio, the rhythmic energy of the scherzo and the exuberance of the finale’s fiery allegro.

What might come as a surprise to even longtime listeners will be to discover that the Vlach Quartet's 1963 recording of Tchaikovsky's E flat minor String Quartet is not only brilliantly played and warmly lyrical but also, somehow, deeply idiomatic. Better yet, their performance is completely convincing, a loving interpretation of a sometimes delightful, sometimes driven, sometimes despairing work. In both the Tchaikovsky and the Dvorák, the Vlach Quartet's recording is as good as the best ever made.

Antonín Dvořák composed his String Quartet No. 106, (B. 192), between November 11 and December 9, 1895. 1895 was an eventful year for him: he returned to Europe from America in April, and his sister-in-law (who had been his first love) died in May. Upon finishing No. 13, he took back up his No. 14 (Op. 105) in A-flat major, which he had begun before this quartet and finished it on December 30 of that year. The quartet in G major was given its first performance by the Bohemian Quartet in Prague, on October 9th 1896.
