The Las Vegas Story is the third studio album by punk blues group The Gun Club, released in 1984. This album saw the return of founding member and lead guitarist Kid Congo Powers, after a three-year stint with The Cramps. The album was dedicated to Debbie Harry "for her love, help and encouragement. All songs composed by Jeffrey Lee Pierce; except where indicated. Side one. "The Las Vegas Story" - 0:23. Walkin' with the Beast" - 4:30. Eternally Is Here" - 3:02. The Stranger in Our Town" - 5:10.
In April 1982, the Gun Club signed to Blondie guitarist Chris Stein's Animal Records, a subsidiary of Chrysalis Records. The band temporarily relocated to New York City to record their follow-up album, 1982's Miami. This album featured not only Stein as producer, but Blondie's Debbie Harry singing backup vocals on several tracks. Ritter left in June 1982 to concentrate on his other band, 45 Grave, and changed his name to Rob Graves. Released on June 25, 1984, this album marked a significant change for the band; it represented a shift away from the punk rock of Fire of Love and Miami and a step towards a more polished, alternative rock sound.
I own the first re-issue put out by Sympathy for the Record Industry and prefer its mastering to this one, released by Cooking Vinyl. The Cooking Vinyl issue seems more muted than the Sympathy issue; I have to turn my stereo up louder to get the same effect as the Sympathy issue.
Keith Morris came up with the band name, Gun Cub, and let Jeffrey Lee have it, or so the story goes. He's great with names, "Off!" for instance, fucking epitomizes his past in early . The Las Vegas Story, the third full-length album by The Gun Club, released 30 years ago this month, is, in a number of ways, a farewell of sorts.
Though the Gun Club, in one formation or another, and Pierce separately, would go on to record a mass of later material, The Las Vegas Story represents the last instant the band existed as a cohesive, creative whole. Pierce would predictably tumble back into addiction, which would end in his death in 1996, at thirty-seven. A trove of bootlegged and unmastered songs would surface and be given full production and release as the Nine Lives box-set.
