On Billboard's charts, the album reached on Black Albums, on Jazz Albums, and on Pop Albums.
Chaka Khan’s third solo album is one of her best. The singer’s patented brand of pop-funk is elevated here by the presence of several high-caliber jazz and fusion players, hand-picked by legendary producer Arif Mardin. Michael and Randy Brecker are all over the album, as is Herbie Hancock, but the biggest surprise is Dizzy Gillespie, who guests on a brilliant modern funk reinterpretation of Night In Tunisia, entitled And the Melody Still Lingers On. The album reinforces Khan’s reputation as a pop diva with serious musical intent

Produced by Arif Mardin. Album What Cha’ Gonna Do For Me. What Cha’ Gonna Do For Me Lyrics. All night and day Just chippin' away It's all in a day's work Tryin' hard to defend The time that I spend alone. The TIME that you lose Exploiting the blues Won't get the job done As hard as it bites I'm keepin' my sights on you. What cha' gonna do for me What cha' gonna do for me What cha' gonna do for me When the chips are down. In the cool of the night When nothing seems right The feeling can take you Strange as it seems You make your own.
This would be Chaka's highest charting album until her 80's-era breakthrough "I Feel For You". It's popularity among jazz audiences was likely due to the inclusion of the Dizzy Gillespie composition "Night In Tunisia" with a guest appearance by Gillespie himself as well as what today would be called a 'sample' of Charlie Parker's legendary seven second alto break from his 1946 recording of the title. For reasons best known to the Warner Music Group the "What Cha' Gonna Do For Me" album has been re-issued on CD in both Europe and Japan - but has yet to see a CD release in the United States.
