Hollywood" Released: April 1977. By 1977, Rufus and Chaka Khan, now a fragile yet still tight unit, were starting to drift in different directions. Recording sessions for this album were troublesome due to tensions between Khan and drummer Andre Fischer. Khan's recent marriage to businessman Richard Holland had drawn a wedge between Khan and Fischer. Khan would later report that during a session, with Holland present, Fischer and Holland had an altercation over a song that led into a fight at the bathroom. Upon hearing the struggle, Khan fought Fischer and band mates reportedly had to carry her away from Fischer
This 1977 effort is the follow-up to 1975's Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan. Ask Rufus has the group doing more sophisticated and constantly challenging work with an accent on evocative ballads. The effort's lone dance track "At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up) has the band going for more subtlety. The jazzy "Close the Door" has a confident and gentle vocal from Khan and a beautiful string arrangement from Clare Fischer who offered them throughout this effort.
This 1977 effort is the follow-up to 1975's Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan.
Ask Rufus was Rufus and Chaka Khan’s fifth album, an R&B Number One titled after the Popular Mechanics column that had previously given the band its name. The album witnessed the funk crew branching out, touching its slow jams with light jazz ( Everlasting Love ), offering a short, classically influenced interlude ( Slow Screw Against the Wall/A Flat Fry ), and ending on a striking orchestral ballad ( Egyptian Song ).
Rufus And Chaka Khan, aside from CK's amazing and influencial singing have always been just mildly underrated as musicians. In the years after the debut, especially with the style of the previous Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan their style had been growing from that of a conventional 70's funk band to what they became with this album. By far this would have to be described as Rufus's artistic pinnacle and is today justly revered. With a couple minor exceptions this album showcases Rufus sticking with a midtempo jazzy soul/funk sound and a great deal of sudlty. Not only is it solid proof that funk doesn't have to be a non-stop rhythm barrage to groove like mad but it features songs that all sound like mini classics. At Midnight" is the main uptempo song here.
