Architecture in Helsinki is an Australian indie pop band which consisted of Cameron Bird, Gus Franklin, Jamie Mildren, Sam Perry, and Kellie Sutherland. The band released five studio albums before going on hiatus: Fingers Crossed (2003), In Case We Die (2005), Places Like This (2007), Moment Bends (2011), and Now + 4eva (2014). As of 2018, they are recording new music with plans to release a new album.

Unfortunately, Places Like This more resembles that messy room than the barely contained creativity of In Case We Die, which I guess makes me the angry Dad with the sore foot in this scenario. It's no joy to say that this third full-length from AiH often misses the mark; the band clearly has a surplus of ideas and energy, which is the opposite problem to the majority of indie mopesters churning out the same album over and over again. They may all be errors borne of excess enthusiasm, but nonetheless they're stylistic choices unlikely to endear Architecture in Helsinki to anyone over the age of four. Elsewhere, the band's unorthodox arrangements lead to dead-ends more than usual. While the mid-song detours may be AiH's signature, they remain a risky move, and Places Like This spotlights a couple moments where it backfires on the band.

On Places Like This, Architecture in Helsinki’s third album, the sugar high not only continues, it reaches new fructose heights. Album opener Red Turned White lands with UFO bleeps and buzzing before doing the robot into a keyboard and guitar groove that sounds as if it were pulled from Gary Numan’s The Pleasure Principle. Only Gary Numan never sounded this.

Places Like These is the third full-length outing for a six-piece outfit that began its life in Melbourne. Recorded at relative speed in New York, where writer/vocalist Cameron Bird now lives, it is completely – and deliriously – at odds with 2005’s In Case We Die. Imagine you’ve dropped your iPod from a great height but it still works, only nothing on it now sounds quite like you remember. In all, Architecture in Helsinki build beautifully infectious songs that induce a spring in the step and place a genuine smile on the lips. Clever, pop literate and not a little sophisticated, they remind you that music can be fun and all the better for it. Go on, treat yourself this summer!

Unoriginal, haphazardly thrown together and lacking most of what could make it the least bit enjoyable, Places Like This just proves that Architecture in Helsinki is a one trick pony.

Unfortunately, this time their fearlessness doesn't pay off: not only is Places Like This not as musically satisfying as Architecture in Helsinki's previous albums, it lacks a lot of their trademark charm and is often downright annoying.
