Live in Europe is the third album by Irish blues guitarist Rory Gallagher, released in 1972. It is a series of live recordings made during his European tour that year. Unusual for a live album, it contains just two songs previously recorded and released by Gallagher ("Laundromat" and "In Your Town"). All the other songs are either new Gallagher songs or Gallagher's interpretation of traditional blues songs.
Rory Gallagher is the first solo album by Irish blues rock musician Rory Gallagher, released in 1971. It marked his departure from Taste. He decided on two Belfast musicians; drummer Wilgar Campbell, and bass guitarist Gerry McAvoy to be the core of his new power trio band.
Blues is the late Rory Gallagher's highest charting album in 14 years on the Official Irish Albums Chart. Skepta, Richard Hawley and Miley Cyrus score new entries. In doing so, it surpasses the Number 5 peak of 2011’s Notes From San Francisco to become his highest charting release this decade, and marks his best chart placement since his compilation 2005 Big Guns topped out at Number 2. At the helm of the chart, Lewis Capaldi leads the Top 50 for a third consecutive week with Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, while Skepta claims a second new entry into the Top 10 with Ignorance Is Bliss at 6, his highest charting release to date and first top flight record
Being an Irish bluesman was tough for Gallagher, especially when he began his career in the 1960s. When he passed away in 1995 at the age of 47, he left behind 17 albums and a legacy of hard traditional blues and big, knotty blues-rock. The package is fine enough with numerous autobiographical quotes from Gallagher, a slew of good photos, and a good liner essay by David Sinclair. While it may be the tried and true devotees that seek this out ultimately, the music listener who would most benefit is the one interested in the evolution of blues or in fine guitar players.
Listen to the best of Rory Gallagher on Apple Music and this site. Having relocated to the UK during Taste’s latter stages, Rory retained his London base, where he auditioned for a new rhythm section. Consequently, Calling Card is perhaps Rory Gallagher’s most diverse release, with the jazzy title song’s lightness of touch contrasting with the brittle riffing of ‘Do You Read Me’, the atypically funky ‘Jackknife Beat’ and the Hendrix-ian aggression of ‘Moonchild’. Before Rory’s next album arrived, he’d be forced to grapple with both line-up changes and the coming of punk.
