The Anthology of American Folk Music is a six-album compilation released in 1952 by Folkways Records (catalogue FP 251, FP 252, and FP 253), comprising eighty-four American folk, blues and country music recordings that were originally issued from 1927 to 1932. Experimental film maker Harry Smith compiled the music from his personal collection of 78 rpm records. The album is famous due to its role as a touchstone for the American folk music revival in the 1950s and 1960s
Though there was hardly any written literature in England in the 15th century, folk poetry flourished in England and Scotland. Folk-songs were heard everywhere. Songs were made up for every occasion. There were harvest songs, mowing songs, spinning and weaving songs, etc. The best of folk poetry were the ballads. A ballad is a short narrative in verse with the refrain following each stanza. The refrain was always one and the same. Ballads were often accompanied by musical instruments and dancing. They became the most popular form of amusement. Some ballads could be performed by several people.

There are some for which I have no clue as to a date, so some may appear randomly placed. If you have an educated correction, please let me know. Also, be advised that for the early ballads, the century may not be the date the tune AND words were known. The tunes and words here are modern variants of the originals.
England has a rich collection of traditional folk songs. This article includes performances of four songs and describes the interesting background of the music. Widecombe Fair" was published around 1890 in a book entitled Songs and Ballads of the West. The collector of the songs in the book was Sabine Baring-Gould, a clergyman who was interested in English folk music. His work is a valuable contribution to our present knowledge.
Folk songs and ballads. Lecture 4. english literature in the 15TH century. The wars of the roses. The death of Chaucer was a great blow to English poetry. It took two centuries to produce a poet equal to him. The Hundred Years' War ended, but another misfortune befell the country: a feudal war broke out between the descendants of Edward III in the 15th century. When the English were completely driven out of France by 1453, the Yorkists (сторонники Йоркширской династии) took up arms against the Lancastrians (сторонники Ланкастерской династии), and in 1455 the Wars of the Roses began.
Folk Songs and Ballads Standards Commercial Hits. Folk Songs and Ballads. Of these early ballads, the one most often collected in the . It was sung during Colonial days, and Abe Lincoln sang it as a boy growing up in Indiana. There are printed references to it in England as far back as 1666, and the poet William Goldsmith mentioned it in the mid-18th century. In the British original, the murderer tries to escape by sailing away, but a great storm comes up, and the ghost of his victim rises from the waves and tears him apart. In the American version, there is no such supernatural retribution; the murderer leaves Polly in her lonely grave, with only the wild birds to mourn.
