Stephen John Hunter (born June 14, 1948) is an American guitarist, primarily a session player. He has worked with Lou Reed and Alice Cooper, acquiring the monniker "The Deacon". Hunter first played with Mitch Ryder's Detroit, beginning a long association with record producer Bob Ezrin who has said Steve Hunter has contributed so much to rock music in general that he truly deserves the designation of "Guitar Hero".

The guitarist Steve "The Deacon" Hunter -born 1948 in Decatur, Illinois (USA)- is best known for his collaborations with Lou Reed and Alice Cooper. He first played with Mitch Ryder's Detroit, beginning a long association with record producer Bob Ezrin. In the 1970s, he appeared on five Alice Cooper albums, four of which were produced by Ezrin. His first collaboration with Lou Reed was for the 'Berlin' album. He also played in the live band captured on Reed's live albums, the aforementioned 'Rock 'n' Roll Animal' and 'Lou Reed Live'. Reed and Hunter also worked recently on a new live version of 'Berlin'. I, like many I'm sure, remember Steve from the intro to 'Sweet Jane'.

This album, "The Deacon", has the most intricate and incredibly complex melody lines of all his albums, in my opinion. These unusual melody lines took me places I've never been to before. They continually surprised me at every note and every turn, and they are a feast for the ears in themselves, on top of his usual layered stellar guitaring. It is a crying shame that this album is out of print. Although his 1st CD, "Steve Hunter" displays more variety and a bit more versatility, The Deacon shows some of his great (although lesser-known) acoustic playing as well as influences he has admired, like Lenny Breau and John Renbourn and his blues playing ranks with the best. Overall there is a great deal of ambience in the cuts here and I recommend it highly-especially for those who have never heard Steve Hunter, guitarist extraordinaire.
