One highlight of the 1980 tour backing their album Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere was a New Year's Eve performance at the Omni in Atlanta, GA. One permanent feature in the set lists was "Free Bird", which was performed without vocals and was dedicated to Ronnie Van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gaines, and Dean Kilpatrick. At one performance in Springfield, Massachusetts during 1980, guitarist Rossington had to play onstage with a broken leg, which happened the day before. Following the death of his wife, Kathy, Allen Collins would routinely walk off from gigs or not appear

In 1988, Jimmy’s first solo instrumental album was for Miles Copeland, then owner of IRS Records, called Anytim. nyplace! In 1991, legendary rapper Dr. Dre produced Jimmy Z’s next album Muzical Madness, featuring Jimmy on lead vocals. In addition, Jimmy Z and Dr. Dre co-wrote all the songs. In the 1990’s & 2000’s, he toured extensively with the late, great Etta James, as well as the Mexican rock band Jaguares, while also fronting his own blues-rock band, ZTribe. The ZTribe CD, Caught Inside is a true indication of Jimmy’s amazing abilities with the harmonica, saxophone and vocals.
