Autre Ne Veut’s Age of Transparency is an astonishing album. It’s also practically impossible to summarize. Beautiful isn’t the whole story. Ugly couldn’t be further from the truth. Even astonishing doesn’t do this album justice. Age of Transparency is what an R&B album would sound like if it was tearing apart at the seams. It’s beautiful in the same way a melted candle is beautiful. Arthur Ashin has been putting music out under the nom-de-plume Autre Ne Veut since 2010, and it feels like his career has been hurtling toward Age of Transparency. In a way it’s braver and more complete than 2013′s excellentAnxiety, pushing the neurosis, self-mutilation, and paradoxical beauty at the center of that album to its furthest limits. It opens with one of the more remarkable first tracks in recent memory. At the core of On and On (Reprise) is a syrupy, almost maudlin, ballad.

His alias, Autre Ne Veut (which roughly translates to "want no other"), is fixated on one thing. It's a quality that makes his music remarkably intense and sometimes hard to stomach, as his voice wrenches like your gut during a panic attack. He channeled that energy into glitzy pop on 2013's aptly titled Anxiety, a stellar album of tortured torch songs that were written in a bluster of creativity. Age Of Transparency is said to be the second in a trilogy started by Anxiety. Inspired by the marketing ethos where brands seek to portray themselves as human, flaws and all, the album's lyrics deal with self-presentation, internet addiction, social media and, of course, relationships. Ashin claims it's a less personal album, but Transparency is unmistakably a product of his psyche, exploring familiar themes in his inimitably hard-to-parse stream of yelps and howls.

This time, the visuals has been revealed for the LP’s title track. Directed by Allie Avital, the video follows the singer as he dances around an office space filled with occupants who’ve been turned to stone

Age Of Transparency explores the difficulty of making personal connections in an impersonal time, according to press materials. The title comes from marketing jargon, Ashin explains. It’s a term for the place we’re in now, where truth and transparency are just ways to sell things and honesty is its own kind of performance. He continues: Transparency is an impossibilit. t’s more about trying to be transparent and falling on your face in the process, a statement that recalls the idea of failure pop that illuminated his previous works.
