From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China is a 1979 documentary film about Western culture breaking into China produced and directed by Murray Lerner. It portrays the famous violinist and music teacher Isaac Stern as the first American musician to collaborate with the China Central Symphony Society (Now China National Symphony Orchestra). The film documented Stern's rehearsals and performances of violin concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johannes Brahms.
With Isaac Stern, David Golub, Delun Li, Ching-Ling Soong. Isaac Stern's cultural tour of China is seen, with the master violinist performing and mentoring young Chinese musicians. He visits rehearsals of the Peking Opera, meeting with their musicians who use traditional Chinese instruments, and also visits a sports academy and other venues. The lingering effects of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), which opposed any western influences and oppressed.

By making this trip, Isaac Stern has made an important contribution to the renewed interest in western music in China. In 1979 violinist Isaac Stern accepted an invitation to visit China as an official guest of the Chinese government. The purpose was to get acquainted with the Chinese people and his fellow-musicians. Stern gave a few concerts and various master classes on the principle: 'first as musicians, then as friends'. Some of Stern's friends were convinced that this first visit by a solo musician would mean a turning point in the cultural relations between China and the West. During the Cultural Revolution western music had been taboo in China.
