I Am the Greatest (Cassius Clay album). I Am the Greatest is a comedy album by boxer Cassius Clay, released in August 1963 – six months before he won the world heavyweight championship, publicly announced his conversion to Islam, and changed his name to Muhammad Ali. It was released by CBS Columbia. The album helped establish Ali's reputation as an eloquently poetic "trash talker"

In December 1969, Ali appeared on Broadway in the musical Buck White. The show ran for just seven performances; but Ali and the cast performed the number "We Came in Chains" on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Muhammad Ali (as Cassius Clay) released a version on his 1963 spoken-word/comedy album I Am the Greatest. Clay's recording was released as the B-side of the eponymous single in 1964, charting on the Billboard "Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles"

But Ali’s principled stand essentially jumpstarted the Sixities antiwar movement, and helped encourage Martin Luther King to come out against the conflict in Vietnam in April 1967. He became a popular speaker on college campuses during his exile from the ring, and in 1971, his conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court in a unanimous vote. He cut his first album in 1963 when he was still Cassius Clay, a spoken word record on Columbia called I Am the Greatest! (with liner notes written by poet Marianne Moore) which also included his cover of Stand By Me. The album reached a peak position of No. 61 on the album chart and was nominated for a Grammy, though Ali would have to wait until 1976 to earn his next Grammy nomination ( Best Recording for Children, for the pro-dental hygiene novelty record The Adventures of Ali and His Gang vs. Mr. Tooth Decay).
Cassius Clay (who would later change his name to Muhammad Ali) recorded this in 1963 on an album called I Am The Greatest!. In 1964, when he beat Sonny Liston to become the heavyweight boxing champ, Clay's version of "Stand By Me" was released as a single, with his spoken-boast song called "I Am The Greatest" as the flip side.
