The French Suites, BWV 812–817, are six suites which Johann Sebastian Bach wrote for the clavier (harpsichord or clavichord) between the years of 1722 and 1725. Although Suites 1 to 4 are typically dated to 1722, it is possible that the first was written somewhat earlier. The suites were later given the name 'French' (first recorded usage by Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg in 1762). Likewise, the English Suites received a later appellation.

Johann Sebastian Bach. French Suites BWV 812-817. Murray Perahia's Bach has a timeless beauty. His interpretation is neither overly historical, nor intrusively expressive - everything sparkles and shines. Johann Sebastian Bach.

Approaching age 70, American pianist Murray Perahia moves with this release from his longtime home of Sony Classical, formerly Columbia Masterworks, to Deutsche Grammophon. The set of Bach's six French Suites, BWV 812-817, was recorded in a Berlin studio in 2013, but did not appear until three years later. This probably testifies to the complexity of the move, but whatever the case, the wait has been worth it. Perahia has long been a marvelous Bach pianist, but the French Suites perhaps display his skills especially well.

Andras Schiff - Piano BWV 812 813 814 815 816 817 The French Suites, BWV 812-817, are six suites which Johann Sebastian Bach wrote for the clavier (harpsichord or clavichord) between the years of 1722 and 1725. The suites were later given the name 'French' (first recorded usage by Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg in 1762) as a means of contrast with the English Suites (whose title is likewise a later appellation)  . There is no surviving definitive manuscript of these suites, and ornamentation varies both in type and in degree across manuscripts.

Johann Sebastian Bach has recently become one of the composers who takes a prominent place in Murray Peraiha's discography. It is not surprising that the London-based American pianist celebrates his new partnership with the Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft with a new recording of the six French Suites of the Eisenach-based composer, written between 1722 and 1724 for the harpsichord or clavichord. Recordings of these works of Bach exist for the historical keyboard instruments as well as for the modern grand piano. Instead of Gould's swing approach, which sometimes brings the Suites closer to jazz, Murray Peraiha ensures that the special grace of the Baroque dance form Allemand, Courante, Sarabande and Minuet is preserved. Overall, his rather conservative view of the Suites is characterized by fascinating elegance.
