Several years in the making, Modern Jester was the culmination of everything the Michigan-born experimental artist had done since the mid-'90s, both by himself and as part of Wolf Eyes, Couch, Universal Indians, and countless other groups

Yet none of them have ever found much resonance with Aaron Dilloway. Dilloway himself claims the sounds in question are indeed real. Then again, it's an assurance undermined by the quote from . Jeter's The Glass Hammer that appears just above.
Insane noise record from former Wolf Eyes guitarist Aaron Dilloway, who, on his solo efforts went on to craft some of the weirdest, most creative noise albums of this decade. Not only that, but a release such as Modern Jester, probably his most flashed out, balanced and dynamic work to date, show a complete noise artist (if that even exist) who manages to craft perfectly developed noise-operatas that use all sorts of sounds, samples and field-recordings, from a dog-bark to a ring-bell, and.
Modern Jester was three years in the making (here a video can be seen of the inventive production of Tremors in 2010), and the perseverance is audible in the final result. The double LP is released through Dilloway’s own Hanson Records, which, in its 18 years of operation, has provided an outlet for noise makers like Kevin Drumm, Hair Police, and Dilloway’s previous band Wolf Eyes. Through artful tape loop experiments, Aaron Dilloway plays the modern jester: a modern-day enactment of the historic entertaining fool, who (according to the Royal Shakespeare Company) served not simply to amuse but to criticize; by way of a confounding disposition, he violates what has come to be expected, ironically, of noise.

The work of noise musician Aaron Dilloway, formerly of Wolf Eyes, exudes a raw vulnerability and needling playfulness. His new album strikes a balance between dread and curiosity. Not so with Dilloway, whose music exudes a raw vulnerability and needling playfulness. On 2012’s Modern Jester, this approach reached its most definitive form, painstakingly stretching grimy tape loops into a rich tapestry of grotty discomfort. The Gag File is his follow-up to Modern Jester and is every bit as rewarding and unnerving as its predecessor, though at almost half the length, it’s easier to digest. Opener Ghost grabs on immediately with a simple, warbling synth drone and a lurching rhythm
