Cannibal Sea is the third album by indie rock band The Essex Green. It was released in March 2006 by Merge Records. Essex Green formed in 1997 in New York City. A part of The Elephant Six Collective, they released an EP and their debut album on Kindercore Records, followed by a second album, The Long Goodbye on Merge Records in 2003. Cannibal Sea was recorded in a number of studios, including producer Britt Meyers home studio, and released in April 2006. The cover artwork was designed by Maggie Fost.

The Essex Green's previous album was a marvelous fusion of their psychedelic pop, soft rock, folk, and indie pop influences, much like a fusion of the Ladybug Transistor and the Sixth Great Lake (not surprising since the three principals in the band also play in those two groups). Released in 2006, Cannibal Sea is a continuation of that sound with the added ingredient of better songs, higher production values, and Final Four-worthy performances. Not that they have been weak in those departments in the past, but now they seem to have hit upon a seam of pure gold.

The Essex Green is a band you don’t hesitate to recommend to your friends-innocent, faintly psychedelic, and disarmingly melodic, the Brooklyn trio fashion carefree indie-pop that feels not unlike a warm spring breeze through your hair. The album often feels cerebral and off-kilter, and its dreamlike ambience at times turns nightmarish.
