The Courts of Chaos may not be Manilla Road’s best offering, but it certainly stands as one of their most intriguing releases. Serving as a fitting end to a magnificent string of albums, representing various tidbits from their entire career up to that point, while still managing to retain an identity of its own. But as strong as the album is, it feels more reserved for a well-versed Manilla Road fan, as opposed to a person’s first foray into their discography. Since their debut album in 1980, Manilla Road had been getting heavier and heavier with each subsequent album, culminating in 1988's raw, occult thrash metal album, Out of the Abyss. The question on most fans' minds had to be "where do they go from here"? OotA was about as dark and heavy as it got while still retaining the same degree of melody. Would they continue in the same style, or perhaps explore even more extreme metal?

The next studio album, The Courts of Chaos, was released in 1990. The release of the album was unusual in that it was done by both Black Dragon Records, for the European market, and Leviathan Records, for the North American market. The North American release of The Courts of Chaos was also done under the name "Mark Shelton" instead of "Manilla Road" due to the blacklisting of bands signed under Black Dragon Records at the time by North American distributors
Manilla Road's "The Courts Of Chaos" album was originally released in 1990. All in all it was a very tough time for Mark Shelton and his band. He answers: "Yes, you are correct with all of that.

Manilla Road's final album prior to the disintegration of their "classic" lineup, 1990s The Courts of Chaos found vocalist, guitarist and guiding force Mark Shelton also playing the role of diplomat between his two estranged bandmates, bassist Scott Parks and drummer Randy Foxe, who were reportedly no longer on speaking terms. Needless to say, such tensions were hardly conducive to a healthy and productive recording environment, and so The Courts of Chaos would, not surprisingly, fall well short of Manilla Road's best efforts from the mid-'80s
