Spookey Ruben (born Alan Deil) is a Canadian musician, producer, songwriter, composer, and filmmaker. Best known for his song and music video "These Days Are old", Dell's songwriting and eccentric production techniques often contrast high and low vocals, analogue keyboards, found sounds, sampled beats and stringed instruments such as electric and Spanish guitar. Spookey has released seven full-length solo albums. In 1996, Ruben contributed to the AIDS benefit album Offbeat: A Red Hot Soundtrip produced by the Red Hot Organization. Disputes with TVT resulted in his leaving the label and years of apparent silence. Eventually, Ruben simultaneously released two separate CDs entitled Bed and Breakfast (Hi-Hat/Zomba) that were later repackaged as a double album. He has since released a new EP, Shackleton and is playing live dates in North America and Europe.

Spookey's home recording experiments led to the making of his solo debut album Modes of Transportation Vol. 1 (TVT Records) which was partially engineered and mixed by Gadi Foltys, Don Kerr, Brad Nelson and Mark Plati (David Bowie). International critical acclaim followed, hailing the album as the "Pet Sounds of the 90s" and "lo-fi pop masterpiece". He returned to Canada to attend film school for two years, but quit to play in several area bands. Frustrated by their lack of originality, Ruben began recording more pop-oriented material by himself; when one of his demos reached TVT Records, the label signed him. Alternative singer/songwriter and experimental filmmaker Spookey Ruben makes melodic, lo-fi, new wave-influenced pop music. Born Alan Deil in Ottawa, Ontario, Ruben spent much of his youth in Germany and other European countries, where his father worked as an engineer for the European Space Agency. By his teens, Ruben's long hair and love of speed metal had earned him the nickname Spookey. Several EPs followed, including 2006's Ausfahrt Walsrode, 2009's Mechanical Royalty, and 2010's Shackleton. As a filmmaker, Ruben directed a series of shorts for Canada's Exclaim! network in 2008. Titled Spookey Ruben's Dizzy Playground, the shorts featured appearances from a handful of other musicians, including Ariel Pink, Feist, Melissa Auf der Maur, and others. In 2012, Ruben returned with the full-length album Welsh Rarebits.
