Harvey Scales (September 27, 1942 – February 11, 2019) was an American R&B singer, songwriter, and producer. Born in Osceola, Arkansas and grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, . In 1961 he formed Harvey Scales & The Seven Sounds along with Albert James Vance. He has written songs for dells, The Dramatics, The O'Jays etc. He recorded singles for Cuca Records, Stax, Cadet Concept Records and Magic Touch Records. Harvey Scales, 'Milwaukee's Godfather of Soul,' writer of hit 'Disco Lady,' has died at 77. The charismatic Scales led the Seven Sounds band, co-wrote '70s hits "Disco Lady" and "Love-Itis," and was even sampled by the Beastie Boys. Scales, 77, died Monday afternoon in a Milwaukee hospital, after first becoming ill in December with kidney failure and pneumonia. Nineteen years would pass before the release of Scales' last studio album, "Somebody Else's Somebody," but before that happened, Scales found his work being sampled by burgeoning hip-hop artists, including the Beastie Boys on their 1989 song "Shake Your Rump," which sampled Scales' 1979 song "Dancing Room Only. When sample-based hip-hop became huge, it was really divisive, and some of these original artists were really curmudgeonly and lawyered up like crazy," Noble said.
