The name does not apply to the symphony itself, but rather to "that which is inextinguishable". In his notes for the symphony, Nielsen refers to "the elemental will to live". Thomson's interpretation of Symphony no. 4 is a standout: monumental, tempo a notch more deliberate than most; huge and powerful. The second movement intermezzo offers wicked pluck and irony.
