Bernstein, Nielsen, Royal Danish Orchestra, New York Philharmonic - Nielsen Symphonies Nos. 3 & 5 album flac

My first exposure to the symphonies of Nielsen was in the late fifties when I heard a recording of the 5th by the Royal Danish Radio Orchestra conducted by Thomas Jensen. This recording first introduced me to the composer. I have since acquired several versions of virtually all of his music that has been recorded. In fact, I played a lot of it during the 20 years or so I was broadcasting on one of our local public radio stations.

Leonard Bernstein was a magnificent conductor of the works of Carl Nielsen (1865-1931), back when his works were little performed. You could say he was a voice crying in the wilderness, letting us know that HERE was a symphonist who was as about original as you could get. And the two symphonies on this cd are LIVING, PALPABLE evidence of how that cry was eventually heard. IMO, the 1960's Bernstein Nielsen NYPO and his (with the Royal Danish Orchestra), put Nielsen on the musical map in America - that's how good they were. It was an important effort; Nielsen deserves the popularity he has now. And, as SFL notes, it was pretty amazing, internationally, that some upstart Yanks could do such a perceptive, in-culture job, way off their turf!

Symphony No. 4, Op. 29, FS 76, also known as "The Inextinguishable" (Danish: Det Uudslukkelige), was completed by Danish composer Carl Nielsen in 1916. Composed against the backdrop of the First World War, this symphony is among the most dramatic that Nielsen wrote, featuring a "battle" between two sets of timpani.
