Wild and Peaceful is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Teena Marie. Released on March 31, 1979 by Motown, It features significant contributions from Rick James. He provided co-vocals on "I'm a Sucker for Your Love". Wild and Peaceful peaked at on the Black Albums chart and on the Billboard Albums chart. The lead single "I'm a Sucker for Your Love" reached on the US Black Singles chart and in the UK. All tracks composed by Rick James, except where indicated.
The first album from the second white female signed to a Berry Gordy label was several years in the making. Singled out by Gordy from a band discovered by Hal Davis, Teena Marie - who, as an eight-year-old, could be seen tap dancing for Jed Clampett in an episode of The Beverly Hillbillies - signed to Gordy and spent a few years living in the household of Fuller Gordy (Berry's brother) and Winnie Martin (Jill Jones' mother). Recordings were made during this period, but nothing materialized until Rick James entered the picture.
Teena Marie is arguably the most renowned of blue-eyed songstresses associated with our genre. For me, what singled her out from her white contemporaries, both before and since is her unique vocal approach. Unlike others, she made no attempt to cling to the tried and tested schools of blues or gospel earthiness in her voice – instead she graced us with something quite unconventional for a blue-eyed soul singer – an utterly unique palette. Her debut for Motown records surfaced in 1979 entitled Wild and Peaceful. The lead single was a duet between Rick and Teena on I’m A Sucker For Your Love, a wonderfully melodic Rick James composition in the You and I tradition – originally written for Diana Ross – and with hit steaming from the grooves, it reached R&B. However with the exception of a gloriously joyful cover of Smokey’s Don’t You Look.
Teena Marie’s debut album, Wild and Peaceful, couldn’t have had a more accurate title. Released in 1979 and largely composed by her longtime collaborator Rick James, the album bounced between moods and moments that represented either end of the emotional spectrum. On it, Marie also flits deftly from high-energy disco and funk to ballads that are steeped in rhythm & blues and jazz. She was signed to the Gordy imprint of Motown, which intentionally marketed her overtly soulful album to black radio

This is Teena Marie's first album and the overall sound and production doesn't yet have the destinctive flavor and style that could be heard as early even as her next album Lady T. Rick James is firmly in control behind the console and of course the one song this album would be remembered for is "I'm A Sucker For Your. This cd is from Hip-O-Select and is a expanded version of Teena's first Gordy issue lp Wild And Peaceful and is produced by Rick James and Art Stewart. This booklet is very informative in that you get a deeper background of who and what made this album. First of the fact that Motown would not allow Rick James to produce a full Diana Ross cd is nonsense to begin with.

An overlooked Motown classic, Wild And Peaceful introduced Teena Marie as an assertive, self-determining artist with an impressive range of skills. Published on. March 31, 2019. Calling Teena’s album that was like telling the cognoscenti: this woman is funky
